The honors art exhibition, Remnants: Conversations with the Past,
represents the culmination of Murleen Ray’s senior undergraduate honors
studies presented to the public through a solo exhibition of original
art and poetry. Ms. Ray engages the public in an evocative and
metaphorical “conversation” through her striking use of iconic imagery
and lyrical poetry. Through an interplay of images and words, Ms. Ray’s
work speaks to how we translate the experience of someone who is no
longer present, and how we “read” the scattered remnants of human
historical past. Using modern poetry and centuries-old printing
techniques, she engages us in a conversation with an imagined past.
Using the forms of printmaking, poetry, book, sculpture, and video, the
artist invites the public to consider how context affects meaning and
understanding; via visual media and language arts, she asks us to both
reflect on what we know, and to consider what we don’t and how our own
imagination comes into
play in every way we interpret experience. In this way, context becomes
an essential aspect of meaning, approaching and infiltrating the
“borderly edges” that exist between the artist and the poet, the poet
and the public, and the public and the art.
The reception Thursday, December 11, and Ms. Ray’s Powerpoint
presentation on Monday, December 15, as part of the College of Arts and
Humanities 2008 honors program, offers students and the community two
interesting opportunities to meet the artist and to discuss her work.
