The Fresno Historical Society presents
The Civil War Revisited
October 18-19
Gates open at 10am
$10 adults, Children 12-6 $5.00, 5 and under free.
This is a wonderful experience for children and adults alike!
A history lesson for thousands!
In partnership with the National Civil War Association (_www.ncwa.org_
(http://www.ncwa.org/) ) Eighteen hundred reenactors will put on a living history
event of the Civil War era. See Union and Confederate and Civilian
encampments, meet historical figures Abe Lincoln, Harriett Tubman, Sojourner Truth,
Walt Whitman and many others. Watch a battle, listen to period music, learn
the stories of the Civil War at outdoor classrooms. Watch as period artisans
work their skills.
Observe the Generals talking about the strategies of the battles. This year
we are telling the Story of Charleston---the Battles of Fort Sumter, Fort
Wagner (where the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry fought . . . the story
from Glory, the movie); Secessionville and the Siege of Charleston Harbor.
The full sized replica of the H. L. Hunley submarine --the first successful
submarine in the world--returns to Kearney Park. It has been rebuilt to
reflect the new findings from the original which is being restored. Meet the
Friends of the Hunley who tell the stories of the sinking of the USS Housatonic
and the sinking of the sub. Meet South Carolina State Senator, Glenn F.
McConnell, the force behind the restoration project.
See the all new horse demonstration -- cavalcade of horse drawn artillery,
the cavalry and watch a military competition - horse jumping while hitting a
target with pistols, lance and sabers! And back by popular demand, the horse
race!
Meet Gunsmoke - bring your children to see this wonderful horse who is one
of the rescued horses by CHAS (The California Historical Artillery Society)
who use Standard bred trotters rescued from California's tracks and retrains
them as artillery horses. These horses now live on a lush 40 acre ranch in
the Salinas Valley. To learn more about CHAS go to _www.warhorse.org_
(http://www.warhorse.org/) . Gunsmoke spent 10 years doing reenactments on the
Gettysburg battlefield. She's been coming to Kearney for several years now to The
Civil War Revisited and pulls the field hospital ambulance. Be sure to go meet
her and her partner, Buttercup! Anyone who has been to the event knows
these horses are special as when the cannons go off, they don’t even flinch!
Join us at Camp Night: two dinners going on simultaneously!
The Soldiers Dinner
Enjoy dinner under the stars, sitting on bales of hay with Union and
Confederate soldiers, enjoy a mid-1800s vaudeville show and dance to the 97th
Regimental String Band! The night is topped off with fireworks!
