Fresno dancers, drummers, yogis and nature-lovers -- there will be two great residential workshops happening in your back yard this summer. Both take place at Camp Hye Sierra, at 4500 feet, which has a small lake for swimming and canoeing, very close to Kings Canyon National Park. Accommodations are shared cabins or bring your own tent. These events are great resources for the Fresno dance community since many teachers are brought in from all over the U.S.
NCDC's Summer Dance Camp happens June 19-28, with professional teachers of many different dance and movement forms -- 5 Rhythms, contact improvisation, yoga, partner dance, African dance and more -- plus gourmet vegetarian meals, Kids Camp for the young ones so their parents can dance, great evening events, and lots of opportunities for relaxing in nature.
Camp Fareta, happening July 12-18, is a West African dance and drum camp that brings in master artists from Guinea, Mali, and Senegal who live all around the U.S. now. There's a great international menu (with vegetarian options), Kids Camp for the young ones, fire circles at night, and work-exchange for those who want it. It is truly a cultural immersion -- like living in an African village without leaving the U.S., and we're working on creating a "Fresno day" this summer for folks who might like to attend just for a day visit.
Prices for both events go up May 1, so check it out now! The website for NCDC is http://www.ncdcdances.org/ and includes online registration. The website for Camp Fareta is http://www.dancingvillage.com/camp_fareta.php. Both sites include lots of photos from previous years. Escape the Fresno heat and expose yourself to some amazing art forms this summer!
