Altered Narratives
A William Raines’ Production

This show represents a shared commentary on our commercially driven culture and its use of advertising media as it drives to create desire and influence our decision making with its bombardment of selective narratives and subtext. This information deluge that buries us through all of its varied means will encompass and define the selection of works for this exhibit.

The process of collage will define and act as a unifying method for selection of materials to make a composition complete and unified, and maintain some coherent representation of work. Throughout this show, artists are positioning the abundance of information and images that entice our senses and fragment our decision making as a referent to the fabric of civic positing. Select fragments of media will supply the source for personal and community identity that has been superficially homogenized through mass communications.

The arts have oscillated around such postmodern themes as history/memory, economics, class/race, ideologies and sexuality. The works in this show confirm a peculiar conflation of the overabundance of a banal media that presents a pressurized psychology through a mere indentation of information.

The reference of the fragmented self and the abundance of material chosen fuse the undervalued and overlooked subtext of images and information that feed upon our unexposed desires of want and participation. The surface and effect of immediacy that inscribe the voices or trace our physical position in our environment through such media is the site of popular culture emulating the transgressive swagger of hand-crafted transcendence stealing away the casual moments of self-conscience.

These artists are including forms of mass-distribution material reworked with their own infusion of subliminal seduction, ready-mades and printed material that engage the saturation of the various forms of information that continue to engulf us on a regular basis. Their inclusion of vilified images of tabloid figures and text position contemporary events embracing an aesthetic (or lack thereof) of related desires (whether personal or product driven) as some form of media desire represent the theme of this exhibit.

These artists position themselves in a strategy of the fragmented and bombarded self through a process of collage that represent the dislocated psychology of space in order to reflect continued oscillation in a moving society of change.
