Quizzical Eye:
Seeing through the lens of Rondal Partridge
What: Reception and conversation with the artist
When: Saturday July 11, 5-8 PM - discussion at 6PM
Where: Spectrum Art Gallery, 608 E. Olive Ave. in the Tower District
Please join us in welcoming the artist at this special reception, where
Rondal will be discussing his work.
Through July 26th, Spectrum is proud to present the work of Master
Photographer Rondal Partridge. Partridge has been creating photographic
imagery for nearly his entire life. He is the son of Imogen Cunningham and
was an apprentice to both Ansel Adams and Dorothea Lange.
He began his illustrious career at the age of 5 by helping his mother in the
darkroom with her platinum printing. During the '30s, he worked as an
assistant to Ansel Adams and Dorothea Lange. He continued his photographic
career working for the National Youth Administration, where he documented
America's youth during World War II. Travelling through California capturing
motorcyclists, hitchhikers and farm workers, he was featured on the pages of
Look, LIFE and Collier's magazines.
Partridge's body of work encompasses a vast array of subject matter, from
the changing landscapes of Yosemite National Park and the San Francisco Bay
Area, to striking images of rodeos, junkyards and flea markets. It also
includes architecture, urban settings, an assembly of still lives, and
portraits, in whimsical, arresting compositions. This exhibit at Spectrum
includes more than forty still life images. The vast majority of which are
the platinum / palladium process, one of the oldest forms of hand processed
photographic printing, requiring not only skill but an intimate knowledge of
proper film negative creation. On display is one of Rondal¹s intriguing
photo ³cubes² a unique puzzle construction invented by the artist.
This quote is taken from Rondal¹s book Quizzical Eye:
³I¹ve known and worked with many photographers over the past fifty years,
and I don¹t believe any of them including my mother, Dorthea Lange ever
loved photography as Ron Partridge loves it. His passion for photography is
unique and incandescent.²...... Daniel Dixon
