Stellar Gallery Press Release - Tales from Ovid - Lyle's Gallery - Fresno


"Tales from Ovid"  is an art exhibit produced in collaboration with  the
University Theatre and the Portable Dance Troupe  performance of "Ted Hughes
Tales from Ovid" .  The exhibit is inspired by classical Greek myth, dance,
music, and the human form, and includes works by artists Jonathan Bock, Mary
Jane Brewster, Judy DeRosa, and Toby Raetze.

 The "Tales from Ovid"  art exhibit opens Wednesday, March 25th, and closes
April 8th at Lyle's Gallery, Theatre Arts Building, CSU Fresno Campus.  The
Gallery is open from 9AM to 4PM for viewing, as well as during performances.
The show will move on April 8th to The President's Gallery where is will be
on display through the end of April.   The exhibit can be viewed from 9AM to
4PM.  Admission to the art exhibit is free. 

Artist and Curator Jon Bock states: "Tales from Ovid is my second
collaboration with Ruth Griffin and the Portable Dance Troup.  My work is
derived from photos taken during rehearsals leading up to the performance.
Because of the demanding timeline between rehearsal and the opening of the
performance, the work was particularly challenging. With only a few weeks to
photograph, analyze, synthesize, and print, the deadlines were intense.  I
found myself drawn to the emotive aspects of the subject, the power of the
gods, sex, passion, fear, love, anger, revenge. all exquisitely expressed by
the performances of the cast.  The intensity of emotion inspired by the
stories became the heart of the resulting artworks. "
 
Jonathan Bock works in a wide range of media.  Photography has been a
persuasive influence on his work, resulting in a synthesis of photographic
processes, computer imaging, and traditional printmaking techniques.

Mary Jane Brewster paints almost exclusively portraits.  Her images are
created from live models, from photographs, and completely from  her
imagination. 

 

Judy DeRosa, an Echota Cherokee, is a versatile artist who works in many
media including painting, collage, monoprint, and jewelry. As a visionary
artist, DeRosa's work beautifully expresses the spiritual yearnings of this
age.  She is a joyful messenger for this new millennium. 

 

Toby Raetze "plays with light" by making what he calls light-cymbals and
other colorful and colorless sculptural creations.   Some of Raetze works
are clear hanging circles others colorful boxes.  When direct light meets
his work it seems to transform into something grand and wonderful like a
blooming flower.
