FILTER is a new body of work by dcac resident artist and founder, Stephanie
Pearl.

 

Artist Statement:

Your perception is how you see things, and basically what you think about
them when you see them. Nweke (1996) defined perception as awareness of
organic processes example awareness of human pang or thirst. Perception can
therefore be rightly defined as the process by which an individual receives,
selects, organizes, transmits and interprets sensations (sensory inputs).
Hence, perception is an individual's awareness of and reaction to stimuli
(Obidigbo, 2000). The way we perceive an object differs from one another and
that is why a given object may conjure up different meanings to two or more
persons.

 

Filter is a body of work that represents my perception of the natural world
stimulated by the environment I grew up in.  Born in Fresno California and
raised in rural Madera County, I was surrounded by miles of grape vines on
one side and wide open fields on the other. These surroundings coupled with
being an only child, afforded me a boundless imagination.  As an adult, I've
realized the dramatic impact this environment has had on how I perceive the
world.  I tend to filter the things I see through a more organic lens. All
works are large in scale. I used acrylic, dirt, leaves and other
non-traditional materials to create texture and dimension. All pieces are on
wood panel.  

 

In addition to these paintings, I've created a site specific installation
exposing the viewer to youthful experiences and creating a visual narrative
for my FILTER.
