Dannelle and Yolanda Ramirez, Rodriguez
Folklorico Moderno's Biography:
We are a mother and daughter duo. Performing music has been in our family
for many generations. Our ancestors saw music as a form of expression. They
fused their culture with the people they encountered on their journey
through Spain and Mexico. The Gypsy mixed with the Spanish. Then our family
moved to Mexico and fell in love with traditional Mexican music. We keep
this tradition by respecting the mixture of the Spanish Gypsy, and the
Mexican culture. Although we perform regional and traditional music, our
pieces are uniquely blended to add all our influences. We perform the songs
in our style, which for example may give a traditional Veracruz piece
palmas, and shawl work or a traditional Buleria might have Indian (South
Asian) dance style (origin of our Gypsy heritage) blended with Flamenco. We
perform Latin dance as well, blending our ancestors culture with Salsa,
Cumbias , and Rumbas. We pay respect to the African influence that is
essential to all Latin Music. We hope to share our music with the world in
hopes that people will relate to our families long hard journey to America.
We are excited about sharing our culture and learning more about others
through music. We would love the chance to perform at weddings, parties, or
any occasion that Folclorico Moderno can share our art.

What is DANCE?:
Dance is your body telling a story. Your soul reaches out through your limbs
and your ancestors say " You remember us, Thank You! " Dance is your bodies
response to heart felt words being sung to you by a voice you know like your
father or mother. The words that are sung call to you so deep in the pit of
your stomach you feel nauseated, like crying hysterically, or so much joy,
like when your child was born. This is dance.
Why is dance important to you?:
When I hear stories of the politics being so bad in Spain that my family was
forced to move, I feel their souls when I perform Gypsy/Spanish songs. I
don't believe dance is mine. My soul and will to dance is a gift given to me
from the past. I hear Mexican music and I remember stories of my grandmother
who was from Andalucia, Spain fighting off solders who came into her village
in Jalisco. My Abuelita Simona then wills me to dance the Mexican song.
Dance to me is my family.
