Clay Mix is proud to present the invitational ceramic cup exhibition
"Intimate Cups" by six artists, Christa Assad, Marian Baker, Mary Camin,
Scott Jennings, Ellen Shankin, and Karin Solberg from November 5th through
December 19th. The way a cup fits in your hands and how it feels when it
touches your lips creates an intimate relationship between you and the cup.
This strong relationship ultimately guides your choice for a "favorite" cup
for morning coffee or late night hot coco or soothing tea. This exhibition
showcases different styles of cups and mugs created by these six artists.
The opening reception is at 5pm on Thursday, November 5th during ArtHop.
Fresno artist, Mary Camin and Scott Jennings of Fullerton, CA will be at the
opening reception to answer any questions.
Design and functionality are two key elements of cup making for many
artists. There are many components that users are not consciously aware of
that make better cups - the way the handles are attached, thinness of the
rim, the cup's size, weight and texture, etc. Christa Assad's cups are
functional, yet have very contemporary looks. Mary Camin's influences are
plants such as cactus and other succulents. Marian Baker uses colors and
designs that are rooted in nature - ocean, beach stones, moss and sky.
Layers of her glossy and matt glaze surface create depth and the illusion of
clouds and sky. Scott Jennings' work is very crisp and simple, yet there is
a handmade quality in the work. Ellen Shankin is a studio potter in Floyd,
Virginia. She states: "my aim is to make pots that sing of their nature in a
total way - in rim, foot, surface and form.". Karin Solberg uses salt fire
techniques to achieve the surface and color she wants. By layering
components together on the surface she creates designs that appear simple at
first glance yet, on closer inspection, unfold into complex symbols.
