Now through January 17,2010, the Fresno Metropolitan Museum of Art and
Science will present "The Art of Dr. Seuss - A Retrospective and
International Touring Exhibition," celebrating the art and life of
Theodor Seuss Geisel (Dr. Seuss). This exhibition chronicles the common
artistic links found throughout his nearly 70 years of creativity.
Theodor Seuss Geisel, a.k.a. Dr. Seuss, began his career as a little
known editorial cartoonist in the 1920's. His unique artistic vision
emerged as the golden thread which linked every facet of his varied
career, and his artwork became the platform from which he delivered 44
children's books, over 400 World War II political cartoons, hundreds of
advertisements, and countless editorials filled with wonderfully
inventive animals, characters and clever humor.
Seuss early works, which demonstrated his love for elephants, turtles,
cats, birds and other real or invented animal characters, will be
displayed along with editorial, advertising, military and illustration
pieces. A special display of, "Secret Art," will also be on exhibit.
To complement Seuss's obscurity and creativity, an exhibit of unorthodox
taxidermy will be displayed which includes three dimensional sculptures
with names like the, "Two Horned Drouberhannis," and the, "Mulberry
Unicorn." Such sculptures earned Geisel the title of, "The World's Most
Eminent Authority on Unheard-Of Animals," by Look magazine.
