Tomás and the Library Lady
Based on the book by Pat Mora
Script by José Cruz González
Directed by Professor Kim V. Morin
In the story by Pat Mora, Tomás is the son of migrant workers; every year he and his family follow
the crops across the country from Texas to Iowa. Nervous about speaking English in front of his
teacher, Tomás is afraid to go to school, but when he meets the "library lady," a whole new world
opens up for him.
This production, filled with puppets that emerge from suitcases and drawings that depict a child's
view of farming in the Valley, is based on the true story of Mexican-American educator, Tomás
Rivera, a child of migrant workers who went on to become the first minority Chancellor in the
University of California system. This inspirational play suggests what libraries--and education--can
make possible for a young child with big dreams.
