The 2nd Street Dancers Biography:
The 2nd Street Dancers were founded in 1985 to enrich the performing arts in our community and to provide opportunities for dedicated dancers to participate in their art. The company of students from The Dancing School of Selma performs jazz and many other styles of dance all over the valley as well as internationally.
In the summer of 2007 the group completed two very successful performances in Rome, Italy where they were invited to share their versatile and uniquely American jazz style. They were honored to participate in the L’Estate Romana a Le Terrazze” di Casalpalocco festival and delighted audiences with their original show “With Love From California”.
In 2001 they were selected to perform as official U.S. Cultural Ambassadors to China. The dancers presented four shows in China and through dance opened doors to friendship, appreciation and understanding between the U.S. and China. In 2003 they performed to standing room only European audiences in Greece. This led to an invitation to dance in the Noches Caribbean International Arts Festival near Cancun Mexico in 2005.
In addition to their performances abroad, The 2nd Street Dancers often dance at schools, hospitals, and local festivals, educating and exposing their community to dance and supporting dance in the valley.
Beth Zobian is the owner of The Dancing School and the director of The 2nd Street Dancers. She is a consultant for Fresno Unified School District, teaching ballet and jazz at Roosevelt High School’s School of the Arts.
Beth was an original member of the 2nd Street Dancers and has been dancing for 30+ years. She has also danced with the Fresno Jazz Company and the Fresno Ballet Company.
She holds a multiple subject teaching credential from California State University, Fresno and a Master of Arts degree from Golden Gate University, San Francisco. In addition to choreographing The 2nd Street Dancers’ local and international shows, she has choreographed for many community musicals including, “Oklahoma” for Selma High School and “The King and I” for The Raisin Cain Players.
Why is dance important to YOU?
Dance has always been a wonderful and enriching part of my life. I love that it encompasses technique and artistic expression in one beautiful, physical process. I love watching my students be transformed in that process.
